Canada Takes Step Towards Electric Vehicle Adoption with Tariff Reduction In a move that could boost the country's electric vehicle (EV) market, Canada has agreed to significantly lower its tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. The new 6.1 per cent tariff, down from the previous 100 per cent rate, will apply to annual imports of up to 49,000 vehicles. This reduction is seen as a key step towards making EVs more competitive in Canada's market, which currently stands at around 1.3 million vehicles per year. The move is expected to make Chinese EVs more attractive to Canadian buyers, potentially accelerating the country's transition to a more environmentally friendly transportation sector.
Canada recently agreed to reduce its 100 per cent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles to 6.1 per cent, with an annual import cap of 49,000 vehicles — about three per cent of Canada’s market.
