https://youtu.be/GYAhSlmkkY0?si=_1V2lsWPwQ1WjwNg -Ethiopia has banned the import of all combustion engine cars -They are building a public transportation system with electric busses. The drivers and passengers love them because they are quite, comfortable and don't stink -They want to do transportation vans next but don't have the equipment yet -They import parts from China to build their own vehicles but are capital limitedto their output is very low at just 500 vans per year. -The vast majority of electricity in Ethiopia is from hydro power. The new hydro dam is outputting 5GW of power. -There are over 500 charging station in the capital, so far, electrification has only been possible in the capital butthey want to expand due to the availability of renewable power It is great to see that a rather poor country like Ethiopia, where half the population lives without electricity, is taking the greatest threat against our species seriously. While countries like Germany and the USA (the country I was born in and the country I currently live in) try their hardest to keep fossil fuel alive by blocking green tech and expanding fossil tech, and in doing so sacrificing literally millions of people to die from air pollution (over 100,000 per year for each country), and surrendering our waters (coral reefs entered bleaching in 2023, will be mostly gone by 2050, 90% of marine life will face risk of extinction due to high water temp, high acidic levels, low oxygen, and no coral reefs), there are some regions that try to not follow the steps of hydrocarbon. I think one reason Ethiopia can do that is because there is no oil lobby that brainwashes the population into thinking facts about our environment aren't true submitted by /u/Activehannes [link] [comments]
