Colorado has taken a significant step towards reducing its environmental footprint by becoming the first state to implement a comprehensive law requiring responsible electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling. Starting in 2025, EV manufacturers will be held accountable for recycling at least 90% of the lithium-ion batteries used in their vehicles. The new law aims to address the growing concern of battery waste and the extraction of critical materials, such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which are often mined in environmentally and socially unsustainable ways. As the US continues to transition towards a more sustainable transportation sector, Colorado's pioneering legislation is set to serve as a model for other states to follow.
