A recent decision to cut Value Added Tax (VAT) on electric vehicle (EV) charging in the UK has sparked debate over the widening cost gap between home-based and public charging options. The move, aimed at boosting EV adoption, has reduced VAT on public EV charging from 20% to 5%, making it more affordable for drivers to charge on the go. However, the reduction in VAT has not been extended to home-based charging installations, leaving homeowners to continue paying the full 5% VAT rate. As a result, the cost difference between public and home-based charging has grown, raising concerns about the long-term viability of public charging infrastructure and the impact on the UK's transition to a low-carbon transportation sector.
