OEM after OEM are telling us that manuals aren't worth the effort to produce any more. Why don't they just charge, say 5-10% of the cost of the base car for a manual transmission option? This would not only provide a new revenue stream execs could use to justify development costs for manuals but presumably most of the buyers who spring for the manual would be an additional sale the manufacturer otherwise wouldn't have had. There's precedent here. Single clutch automated manuals were a pricey upcharge in the mid 2000s from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi and the like. IMO charging for a manual is way less egregious than the $5k+ that OEMs routinely charge for carbon fiber add-ons. If consumers are lining up to spend $30k on manual conversions for Ferrari 360s and 430s why wouldn't GM be able to sell manuals as a $10k option for the Z06? Yes I know it would suck since sports cars are already difficult to afford for a large portion of the population but I'd rather manuals be available at a price that makes the development costs worth it than continue the steady phase out we've seen over the last two decades. If your response is "I don't want to make the cars I love more expensive" I say with the current market trajectory manuals will be reserved for restomods like Singers and others deep in the six figure range sooner rather than later so we're being priced out whether we like it or not. We know what will happen if we just continue with the current pricing model. Discuss. submitted by /u/taticalgoose [link] [comments]
